Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and is the center of a metropolitan area with a population of over 1.1 million. Salt Lake City is home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was founded by numerous Mormon followers in the 1840's. Today, however, less than half the population of this area are members.
This beautiful city is located in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley. The steep Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges border the eastern and southwestern borders and the Great Salt Lake borders the northwest. There are many beautiful canyons such as Emigration, Millcreek, City Creek and Parley's that border the eastern city limits of Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City is also the Industrial banking center of the United States. In recent years a strong outdoor recreational tourist industry has been developed and in 2002 the Winter Olympics were hosted here.
The city is laid out in a grid plan and most major streets run very near north-south and east-west. The Salt Lake Temple is the origin of the grid. The streets were built wide initially so that a horse and carriage could turn around without "resorting to profanity".
Salt Lake City has hot summers and snowy, cold winters. Average snowfall is between November to April. There are large variations in temperatures between seasons with summer temps averaging in the 90's and dropping below freezing in the winter.
Museums abound throughout the Salt Lake City metropolitan area including the Natural History Museum of Utah, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Fort Douglas Military Museum, and The Leonardo, just to name a few.
Of course, Salt Lake City is also home to the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir which was founded in 1847. Their weekly program is the longest running continuous network broadcast in the world.
