The EMT or Emergency Medical Technicians are the ones who respond to emergency calls to transport the patient to a medical facility while providing efficient and immediate care to the critically ill or injured. The EMT responds to an emergency call by driving the ambulance to the location using the quickest route.  When the EMT arrives at the location he/she will park the ambulance in a safe location and then check out the scene to see if additional personnel or equipment needs to be called for. The 
Emergency Medical Tech will determine the nature and extent of the illness or injury and establish priority for required emergency care. The EMT will provide emergency medical and/or trauma care to the patient{s} based on their assessment of the situation.


Some of the duties may include but would not be limited to the following:

  • Ventilating patients
  • Opening and maintaining an airway
  • Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of automated external defibrillators.
  • Providing emergency medical care such as controlling hemorrhage, bandaging wounds, immobilization of painful, swollen or deformed extremities, treatment of shock.
  • Providing emergency medical care to: assist in emergency childbirth, manage general medical complaints of altered statuses such as respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, mental, allergic reactions, seizures and more.
  • Searching for medical ID info in order to provide appropriate emergency care
  • Assisting patients with the use of prescribed medications such as epinephrine auto-injectors, hand-held aerosol inhalers or sublingual nitroglycerin.
  • Administration of oral glucose, activated charcoal or oxygen.
  • Work in a confident and efficient manner in order to reassure patients and bystanders.
  • Accomplish the task as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Constantly assessing the patient while en route to the medical facility and administering additional care as directed by medical control.
  • Report verbally and in writing to the receiving facility all observations and care administered to the patient at the scene and enroute to the facility.

After each call the EMT would be required to:

  • Clean all equipment following the appropriate disinfecting procedures
  • Restock and replace used supplies including linens and blankets.
  • Keep the ambulance in proper working condition.
  • Check out all equipment so as to be ready for next call.
  • Keep the ambulance clean, neat and orderly.
  • After transport of a patient with contagion or hazardous materials exposure make sure the ambulance is decontaminated in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
