Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse in the Corrections field will provide inmates of the facility with routine and emergency healthcare in the medical section of a corrections facility. While operating within the confines of the correction facility, the Corrections LPN/LPV will perform many of the tasks of those who work in traditional medical establishments. The LPN/LPV is there to provide adequate health care by assessing, diagnosing and treating the inmates. In some instances the Corrections LPN/LPV may have more independence in this position since there is a usually a smaller staff in this type of facility. Also corrections nurses hone their assessment skills due to the accessibility to fewer supplies and options. LPN/LPV will conduct and record health histories on inmates. If necessary, make referrals of inmates to the staff physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, mental health professional or specialist in drug and alcohol abuse treatment. LPN/LPV would determine if an inmate required emergency hospital care and ensure that all medications are administered in accordance with standard operating procedures as ordered by the authorizing authority.

Maintaining proper safety procedures is of utmost importance in the setting of a corrections facility. Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse will monitor medical supplies including medications, needles and tools. In order to maximize overall safety, LPN/LPVs leaLPN/LPV to limit the use of potentially dangerous materials like IV drips and scalpels.

LPN/LPV Corrections Responsibilities may include:

  • Perform focused interview with inmate to identify their specific needs.
  • Use the process of nursing to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
  • Assess symptoms indicating phychosocial and/or physiologic changes in patients condition.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data and information from other health care providers.
  • Document actual and/or potential diagnoses as well as documenting the patients plan of care using these diagnoses, selected nursing interventions and expected patient outcomes.
  • Identifies and prioritizes care and treatment based upon patient requirements.
  • Perform interventions according to priorities, plan of care, and the facilitys policies and patient care outcome standard.
  • Monitor the consistency of patient care by medical staff.
  • Provide and evaluate patient and family education and information.
  • Provide a safe and comfortable patient environment.
  • Document the response of the patient to nursing and other interventions.
  • Monitor and revise care plans according to evaluation and effective or ineffective nursing interventions
