Dallas was founded in 1841 by John Neely Bryan who chose the site along the river for his trading post. Dallas experienced significant expansion during the Civil War years as it was used as a supply depot for the confederate troops. In the 1870's the railroad came through town. In 1930 the oil strike caused a boom in the Dallas economy and the city became a financial and freight center.

Dallas has over 50,000 acres of park lands in the 336 parks and there is access to 50 reservoirs and lakes for fishing, sailing, boating and swimming. There are over 500 miles of bike trails available in the parks and bike lanes along the streets of Dallas. The Dallas version of NYC's Central Park is called White Rock and is located in the center of the city. It's a favorite of many for biking, jogging, fishing and sailing.
Dallas, Texas is home to the ballet, summer musical festivals, dance theater, a Shakespeare festival, two symphonies and several more performing arts organizations. There are 23 city libraries in Dallas and several museums and cultural centers including: African American Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Zoo, Latino Cultural Center, Meyerson Symphony Center, Pegasus Plaza, just to name a few.
